Stop Press!

Trying to finish Cyprus trip. Four new videos uploaded into previous posts.

After trotting around Southeast Asia over the summer, I'm now back in the UK - Cambridge to be exact. Am trying my best to update as frequently as my clinical course will allow.

Entries on Italy and France two winters ago have been put on hold indefinitely. Read: possibly never. But we shall see.

Entries on Greece and Turkey last winter have also been put on hold for the time being.

Hong Kong celebrates its 10th anniversary of reversion to Chinese sovereignty and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region with a display of fireworks.

With the signing of the Convention Respecting an Extension of the Hong Kong Territory on 9 June 1898, Britain leased the area between Boundary Street and Deep Bay, i.e. the New Territories, together with about 235 islands, from the Qing government. The lease began on 1 July for 99 years, which would expire in 1997.

On 22 September 1982, Mrs. Margaret Thatcher, the British Prime Minister, first visited China and met Deng Xiaoping, the Chinese statesman two days later to discuss the issues of Hong Kong's future. On 19 December 1984, China and Britain signed the Sino-British Joint Declaration in Beijing to confirm Hong Kong's reversion to Chinese sovereignty on 1 July 1997.

At 11.30 pm on 30 June 1997, the Sino-British Handover Ceremony was held at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. At 12:00 am on 1 July, the national anthem of China was played, followed by the hoisting of the national flag of China and the flag of HKSAR, signifying China's resumption of sovereignty over Hong Kong from then on. At 1.30 am, the Ceremony for the Establishment of HKSAR and the inauguration of the Government of HKSAR was held.
