Stop Press!

Trying to finish Cyprus trip. Four new videos uploaded into previous posts.

After trotting around Southeast Asia over the summer, I'm now back in the UK - Cambridge to be exact. Am trying my best to update as frequently as my clinical course will allow.

Entries on Italy and France two winters ago have been put on hold indefinitely. Read: possibly never. But we shall see.

Entries on Greece and Turkey last winter have also been put on hold for the time being.

Confucius Temple

The brick pavements of the outer court are covered in dark green moss. It's so slippery that he slips a couple of times. For no particular reason, he tries to dance a spot turn. He executes it perfectly but slips just as he's about to step to the side.

Stately juniper trees grow tall and straight at precarious angles amongst a forest of stelae. The ingenuity of Chinese architects are evident from the masterful execution of gouxin and doujiao in retaining the overall design of the structure and yet avoiding disaster.

The Hall of Integration has seen better days but its yellow rood still gleams golden in the sunlight. Ten impressive stone columns support the wide roof while lifelike dragons scuffle over pearls amidst swirling clouds. Within, the statue of Confucius sits. Everything proclaims his imperial status, the golden roofs, the dragon columns and his imperial robes.

He explores the eastern axis of the temple in search of the original temple: Confucius' three rooms. But finds them not. They must not have survived the expansion and renovation of the temple. Pity.
