That movement and the government's violent suppression of it still define the square in most minds, Chinese as well as foreign. All physical traces of the crackdown disappeared after the square received a face-lift in 1999, just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic, but reminders remain in the stiff-backed soldiers and video cameras since put in place to ensure order is maintained.'
It couldn't have been more wrong. According to David:
'The only reason why there are so many guards checking every single bag that enters the square is to stop crazy Tibetan terrorists from bombing the place up.'
